Buyers usually arrive at this matchup from opposite doors: one walked out of a dealer yard with a TMG quote, the other got told by their insurer or municipality to look at certified structures and found Cover-Tech. These are different product models — a retail catalogue kit against a quote-based engineered build — and the honest job of this page is to show where each model earns its price rather than crown one of them. Warranty is the strangest row here and worth a second look: TMG's 1 year is short but unambiguous; Cover-Tech's 10–15 years on the cover is long but prorated, and its frame term isn't published at all. Depending on what breaks and when, either brand could leave a buyer better protected — which is exactly why we tell people to read the actual documents, not the headline years.
Cover-Tech crates are the tidier open. Fewer than 5% of their installs have needed hardware substitution from our bins — the welded architecture leaves fewer loose fasteners to short-ship — and the drawings are permit-office grade. TMG kits short-ship a few bolts or a strap on a meaningful minority of crates (1–3% of the hardware count when it happens), and the translated manuals have a habit of going ambiguous precisely at the tensioning sequence.
Field behaviour splits along the bolted-versus-welded line. TMG's bolted U-channel goes up fast, tolerates a slightly imperfect pad, and holds square over time when anchored right; our standing TMG jobs are upgrading peak-anchor hardware on 50-foot-plus snow-zone builds and stopping first-timers from over-tensioning a cover that keeps shrinking for six weeks. Cover-Tech's welded frames are stiffer and less forgiving of foundation error — we hold their pads to ±¾-inch, tighter than bolt-together tolerance, and budget an extra half day at 50 feet and up for anchor precision. Neither of those is a defect; they're the personalities of the two construction methods.
Pick TMG if you want a kit with a visible price you can act on this week, dealer stock that might beat any engineered builder's lead time to your yard, or the 32 oz Pro cover — which, at ~1,085 g/m², is heavier than anything in Cover-Tech's published range including the 28 oz upgrade. You accept a 1-year warranty and catalogue documentation as part of that deal.
Pick Cover-Tech if the project needs certified engineering — insurance, permits, institutional procurement — or Canadian manufacture, welded construction, and custom lengths matter more than sticker transparency. Spec the PVC upgrade if you're comparing covers against TMG's PVC line, because the 14 oz PE default isn't the same product class, and get the frame warranty in writing during the quote.
The wrong reason to pick either: assuming the quote-based brand is automatically the expensive one, or that the catalogue brand is automatically the value one. TMG's published pricing sits at the high end of its own segment, and a Cover-Tech quote prices in engineering the catalogue kit simply doesn't include. Compare your actual quote against the actual list, at your actual cover tier.
If your project needs what the premium buys — CSA A660-10 certification for insurers or permit offices, CWB-certified welds, Canadian manufacture, custom lengths — yes, that package is real and TMG doesn't offer it at any price. If you just need dry storage and none of those apply, the certification premium may not earn its keep, and the comparison shifts to covers, warranty documents, and your actual quoted number against TMG's list.
It tracks the cover more than the brand. Cover-Tech's standard 14 oz PE runs roughly 8–10 years in Prairie sun; TMG's 17 oz standard runs roughly 8–10 as well, with the 21 oz and 32 oz tiers stretching to 10–12 and 15+ years. Cover-Tech's 22–28 oz PVC upgrades reach 15–18+ years. Frames from both, properly anchored, outlast the first cover. Buy the cover tier that matches your keep horizon.
